Welcome to the journal... [12 Dec 2012|12:12pm]
[ music | right as rain ;; adele ]

Hello and welcome to this lovely (but not really) El-Jay I have made for my fan-fiction, Moonshadow. More than likely if you're reading this you're from the boards, but if you're not I'd better go through everything again, only newly improved for your enjoyment and my sanity.

First off, my name is Adrienne and I will be your authoress for this evening. However, not a soul that's reading this calls me that, so I'd advise you not to. Most commonly, I go by A or Miss A. You can pick one of those. I'll answer to anything, though, so if you just want to make something up, go ahead. ALo, Alist, and Anus are my favorites.

Now I think I should give you a bit of background on this story, though you probably don't give a damn. Honestly, I don't either. Let's just say it's been rewritten more times than I’d care to guess and posted on the boards way too many times and will probably continue to be. Good? Good.

Time for the legits.

Title: Moonshadow
Authoress: A
Summary: Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is an awe-inspiring, excitement-filled place to be, and dreams of it fill the minds of every young witch or wizard in the country. Remus John Lupin was no exception to this rule—all he ever wanted was to attend the school of his father, of his dreams. A harrowing encounter with a werewolf at the tender age of seven left him not only scarred for life, but also unable to attend. Now, four years later, his dreams are all coming true—he is finally going to Hogwarts. But along with the magic he expects to find, he may just find something more—friendship, love, tragedy and, most importantly, acceptance.

Let us see what awaits us in the shadows of the moon...
Era: MWPP
Timeline: 1971-1981, minus the prologue, which takes place in 1967.
Main Characters: Remus Lupin, James Potter, Sirius Black, Peter Pettigrew, Lily Evans, Frank Longbottom, Adin Locielle
Genre: General
Warning: Currently, none. Any warnings will be posted at the beginning of the chapter.
Rating: Probably PG-13. I may get a little swearing in here and there, but that won't be for a while. Also, some mild sexual innuendo will be coming along much later in the fic, c. 1979 in fic-time.
Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter, for if I did, I'd be rich. Ms. J.K. Rowling has ownership of all the characters you recognize, as does Scholastic, Bloomsbury, Warner Bros., and everyone else I don't know. All the characters you don't know I own, as well as the plot.
Author's Notes: This fic is NOT a songfic and has absolutely nothing to do with the Cat Stevens song of the same title. I merely like the name of the song. Also, all comments are appreciated greatly; that’s sort of the whole point of this, don’t you think?

And now, without further ado, I give you Moonshadow.

Prologue [11 Dec 2012|02:56pm]

Prologue

Young boys play as young boys play. They wallow in the ground, wrestling with one another. They chase each other with sticks or with their bare hands. Sometimes they even chase each other with toy broomsticks.

Four young boys played such as that on a hot July day. It had been a long and hot summer thus far and that day was no exception. None of the boys minded the intense heat, though, for they were running and playing as young boys do.

The oldest of the four was Remus Lupin, and he wasn’t old himself; Remus had turned seven a few months earlier. At that moment, Remus was being chased by a boy with shining blonde hair and deep brown eyes. This boy’s name was Todd, and he was a year younger than Remus. Todd was yelling and chasing his best friend around the woods surrounding their houses.

Outside of the chase, for the time being, were two boys, each younger and smaller than Todd. One was grinning madly, waiting for the right moment to strike and tackle either Todd or Remus to the ground. He brushed a few pieces of ginger hair out of his eyes before yelling and tackling both older boys to the dirt.

The second boy on the outside of the three rolling boys was the youngest of the group—he was merely three years old, two years younger than the ginger haired boy, Michael. The young boy—whose name was Kevin—was standing as far from the three older boys as he could. Kevin watched them in awe, wondering when the day would come when they would actually let him play with them and their toy brooms. Kevin never said a word to any of them, even when they stopped wrestling on the dirt and came over to him, panting, and grinned at him.

Remus looked up at the sky with bright blue eyes. The sun was setting soon, meaning that they probably only had a few more minutes to play before their mothers called them in. Remus loved these boys—they were his best friends in the entire world—even little baby Kevin—and nothing was ever going to change that.

All too soon to the liking of the boys, the sun finished setting and the moon came out to play. Ignoring it, the four boys continued to chase and laugh, wrestle and grin, even after the whole full moon was shining brightly on their heads. They were going to wait until their mothers started calling them in, but until that moment, they were going to continue being young boys and play.

No one heard the growling except for Remus.

He and Michael had begun chasing Todd, coming very close to the off-limits woods in their backyards. As soon as he heard the growling, Remus stopped; Michael ran into him and fell to the ground in a huff. Todd stopped running, too, and looked at Remus.

“Why’d you stop chasing me guys?” he asked in the questioning voice all children have.

“I don’t know, but Remus just stopped running and made me fall down on my bum!” Michael said, making Kevin giggle.

“I heard something, in the woods. It sounded like growling,” Remus said, not taking his eyes off of the trees before him.

“Aw, it’s probably just some stray dog. Forget about it, Remus,” Todd said nonchalantly. Remus opened his mouth to say it hadn’t sounded like a stray dog when a woman’s voice came calling from one of the houses.

“Michael, Kevin! It’s time to come inside now, dinner’s ready!” she called to her sons. Michael huffed and pouted for a minute or so, before heading towards his mother in her messy apron. The door shut as Todd shrugged and followed suit, knowing his mother would be calling him at any moment.

A few seconds later, Remus decided to head to his own house as well. He turned away from the woods, deciding that the growling was just his imagination, since he had never been so close to the woods after sunset.

He was halfway to his house when he heard it.

Little Kevin was screaming at the top of his lungs. Remus whipped around just as the other two boys did, to see what the small boy was screaming about. Coming out of the woods was a wolf.

The wolf was big and brown-gray, with a growling muzzle and sharp-as-knives teeth. It was staring at Kevin intently, its yellow eyes filled with hunger, it seemed. Slowly, it took a few steps toward the boy.

The other three boys yelled at Kevin and told him to run as fast as he could, but the boy was frozen in the spot, scared stiff of the monster in front of him. As the wolf took more careful steps toward the boy, Remus could no longer take it, and he ran to Kevin as fast as he could, grabbing his torso from the front and dragging his light body to the houses.

As soon as Remus grabbed Kevin, the wolf howled to the moon and came hurtling toward the two boys. Todd made a move to help them, but he became frozen as Kevin had become, and he couldn’t move. Michael was screaming for his mother.

Remus dared not look behind him, knowing that if he did he’d see the razor-sharp fangs inside that smelly mouth, and he, too, would become frozen and then the wolf would have a chance at both he and Kevin.

Remus was a fast runner, but the wolf was faster. He was nearly to Todd when the wolf caught him by the pant-leg and pulled. He let Kevin slip out of his arms as he tugged on the ground, but the grass merely became uprooted and stuck in his small fists. He screamed for help from one of the boys, but they had grabbed Kevin and were watching in horror as the wolf dragged Remus toward the woods.

Tears flooded his eyes. He didn’t want to die, he was only seven! He wanted to attend Hogwarts, he wanted to learn magic, and he wanted to fly on a broomstick. He didn’t want some lone wolf to eat him! The wolf stopped dragging Remus just outside the woods. He tried to run away once it let go, but he merely fell back down, facing his attacker. The wolf’s yellow eyes had a tint of red now, filled no more with hunger, but a thirst for blood and death.

It sank its teeth into Remus’s calf as he cried for his parents.
